This standard aims to unify devices for reading and/or writing identifiers and other data from and to carrier tags (or similar). It enables upstream controllers (e.g., MES host) not only to request read or write operations in a standardized way, but also to access the current operational status of the device's hard- and software, which is described through state model methodology. Although the actual reading and writing technology (e.g., RFID) is out of scope, SEMI E99 distinguishes between a main reading/writing device and their associated heads, which are both defined as object types regarding SEMI E39 (Object Services).
Mapping of the services defined by SEMI E99 to the SECS-II protocol is specified in the subordinated document SEMI E99.1.
