Retrofit Marshalling Yard Senftenberg with New Control Technology

Implementation of a new reail brake control system for the marshalling yard Senftenberg

Through Kontron AIS GmbH, DB Netz AG, under the project management of DB Engineering & Consulting GmbH successfully completed a control system retrofit for the marshalling yard Senftenberg by the aid of the new VarGBS track brake control system. Within only two months of commissioning under “rolling wheel“, the old control technology for two retarders and 19 secondary retarders have been replaced by the new control system generation VarGBS.

“With their know-how and high degree of commitment, Kontron AIS contributed to the successful project fulfillment in due time.” Falk Hebenstreit, DB Netz AG, Head of Production Planning and Controlling Dresden

Goals
  • Sustainable control platform
  • Long-term availability of hardware and software
  • Retrofit without operational interruptions
Challenge
  • General contractor for the entire rail brakes control project
  • Short commissioning period
  • Application of new control platform
Result
  • Goal achievement on time and in budget

Step-by-step – VarGBS generation 8

In the design of this innovative product special attention was paid to the fact that the system VarGBS is suitable for the renewal of existing plants with scalable granularity. In addition to a completely new hardware platform for marshalling yards, the real-time operating system Linux RT was used for the first time. On top of that, the already existing system could be migrated without any adaptations thanks to an innovative architectural approach.

The simultaneous adherence to time and and costs, as well as the future-proof control system that is now ready for the future make this project a complete success.
